About the event

The aim of this session is to identify the condition of an artwork to inform our handling, and to document its condition to enable monitoring throughout its handling, display, transport, etc.


A condition report is a written and/or electronically filed record that details the condition of an artwork based on a close examination of it and all its parts. 


When used with photographs and illustrations, the report clearly records the physical condition of the artwork at that time. When kept systematically, condition reports document any changes over time. It informs our handling and installation, whether treatment is required, etc.


These changes may be caused by: natural ageing of sensitive materials, accidental damage, vandalism, infestation, inappropriate display or storage conditions, improper handling or inappropriate packaging for travel, as well as any alteration to the work due to a restoration treatment.
