Purpose: The Head of Technical is the senior operational and technical lead responsible for overseeing all artwork handling, installation, logistics, warehouse operations, gallery technical services, and special projects. The role ensures the safe, efficient, and high-quality delivery of art logistics and installation services across galleries, museums, auction houses, art fairs, and private clients, meeting international museum and industry standards.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Technical & Operational Leadership
• Lead all technical operations across gallery services, warehouse operations, registrar functions, and special projects.
• Ensure seamless coordination between departments for end-to-end project execution.
• Implement and enforce SOPs, safety standards, and best practices across all operations.
• Maintain international standards for artwork handling, installation, transport, and storage.
2. Special Projects & Installations
• Lead major projects including art fairs, exhibitions, auction house operations, and high-value private installations.
• Oversee planning, scheduling, manpower allocation, risk management, and on-site execution.
• Ensure successful delivery from planning through project handover.
3. Gallery Technical Services
• Oversee all gallery-related logistics including deliveries, installations, packing, crating, and storage.
• Act as technical lead for gallery clients and ensure service quality and consistency.
• Support client service teams with technical guidance and solutions.
4. Warehouse & Storage Operations
• Manage warehouse operations, inventory control, and artwork storage systems.
• Ensure safe handling, environmental control, and accuracy of all stored artworks.
• Optimize warehouse space, manpower, and operational efficiency.
5. Workshop & Crating Development
• Oversee carpentry workshop and development of custom crating/packing solutions.
• Introduce improved materials, methods, and technical innovations.
6. Client Management
• Serve as senior technical advisor to galleries, museums, auction houses, curators, and collectors.
• Support client communication through accurate and professional technical coordination.
• Strengthen long-term client relationships through operational excellence.
7. Team Leadership & Development
• Lead, train, and develop Operations, Warehouse, Registrar, and Installation teams.
• Improve technical capability, safety awareness, and performance standards.
• Support recruitment, training, and workforce planning.
8. Risk, Safety & Quality Control
• Identify and mitigate operational risks in handling, transport, and installation of artworks.
• Ensure strict adherence to safety procedures and quality standards.
• Maintain a “zero-failure” approach to all high-value art handling.
9. Reporting & Continuous Improvement
• Ensure timely submission of job, condition, and project reports.
• Drive operational improvements, innovation, and efficiency initiatives.
• Contribute to KPI development and performance tracking systems.
10. Major Events & Strategic Projects
• Lead operational execution for major art fairs, exhibitions, and institutional projects.
• Ensure premium service delivery for key clients and high-profile events.
11. Client Services (CS) Team Guidance & Mentorship
• Provide ongoing guidance and mentorship to the Client Services (CS) team to strengthen their technical understanding and operational awareness.
• Equip the CS team with enhanced knowledge relating to, but not limited to, art installation and deinstallation, packing and unpacking, crating, and general artwork handling procedures
12. Additional Duties
• Perform any other duties as assigned by management from time to time to support operational requirements and business objectives.
Education & Experience:
• Degree in Fine Arts, Arts Management, Logistics, Operations, or related field.
• Minimum 8 years’ experience in art logistics, gallery operations, installation, or warehouse management.
• Strong experience in international art handling and large-scale project delivery.
• Proven leadership of multi-disciplinary operational teams.
