EDUCATION & ADVOCACY

Our education and advocacy programmes are designed specifically for educational institutions and can be incorporated into existing educational programming or offered as stand-alone learning.

Our information sessions, modules and short courses not only boost artists' and makers' professional practices, but also enhance transferable skills, and increase employability.

With decades of industry experience our highly experienced facilitators introduce learners to the role of the art technician within cultural settings such as galleries, museums, collections, fabricators and artist studios. They examine the work of the art technician and how it can inform artistic best practice and then go on to highlight transferable skills that can increase employability post-academia.

“‘All the trainers/facilitators were fantastic! Loved the balance between more formal and structured talks and presentations followed up with more relaxed practical sessions. Very friendly and welcoming atmosphere.’ 11-week Art Technician Bootcamp, COVENTRY UNIVERSITY 2022

Learning Format

We will work with you and your institution to devise a programme of learning that meets the specific needs of your students.

Our flexible approach to delivery means that this learning can be incorporated into existing educational programming or offered as stand-alone learning modules or short courses.

Because our facilitators are both industry professionals and skilled educators, we are able to offer a combination of classroom learning and hands on work to ensure that our learners are both grounded in theory and able to put their learning into practice.

Examples of content covered in previous learning include:

  • Art Handling - understanding the different artistic mediums and their handling and installation considerations.

  • Exhibition mechanics - handling and moving artworks and artefacts safely and securely, installation methods and appropriate fixings and fittings.

  • Preventative conservation - how to care for artworks to preserve them in perpetuity, such as how to pack them safely for transport and storage, and how to perform remedial cleaning.

  • Condition reporting - documenting the physical state of an artwork, which can be a stand-alone role in galleries and museums.

  • Communication skills - writing and understanding install guides & and method statements so artistic visions are realised accurately when exhibited.

  • Audio Visual and new media installation - how sound and light work in relation to the gallery environment and how to set up an AV installation such as speakers and projectors.

  • Health and safety - how to work safely and according to UK H&S legislation to ensure they keep themselves, those around them, their environments and the art and artefacts they may handle safe and secure at all times.

Learner Outcomes:

  • Increased artistic professionalism through understanding artistic materials and installation methodology, which helps to enrich and shape creative practice and production.

  • Increased employability by illustrating transferable skills and introducing career paths within the art technical industry such as fabricators, installers, collection managers, artist assistants etc. so they can support themselves & their artistic practice post academia.

  • Increased confidence to be creative, to be an effective communicator and problem solver, and improves patience and adaptability.

Case Studies:

  • Ruskin School of Art and Bournemouth University: 1 one-hour intro session on artistic professional practice in relation to working with technicians and organisations such as how to produce an install guide. Feedback from students showed increased industry awareness and a desire for further learning about industry best practice.

  • Contemporary Visual Arts Network - East Midlands: 3-week programme in concentrating on developing skillsets in the region to facilitate greater confidence and therefore increased employability. Post-learning evaluation showed significant increases in student confidence across all key skill areas including, art handling, installation, packing and moving, with an overall 83% increase in student confidence to work in the industry.

  • Coventry University: 11-week programme of training for learners, covering core technical skills and employability with learners ranging from 22 to 65, from diverse backgrounds and skill levels. This programme has been exceptionally successful and really popular with learners, with 90% of learners getting paid art technical employment following course completion.

Learner Feedback

‘The training program was absolutely fantastic. It taught me everything I need to know about being an art technician and so much more! The trainers were phenomenal! They were both so hands-on and knowledgeable. They taught the class really well and explained everything thoroughly, and even when you did not understand something they would take time out to walk you through it. They were kind and approachable which made it so easy to talk to them and ask questions. They both shared advice, art tech hacks, and lessons that they learned while being an art technician which was great because we got to learn from someone with experience. I am beyond grateful for this programme because I desperately wanted to become an art technician, but there was not any official training available. Now that I have the training, I feel so confident and excited about my future as an art technician.’ CVAN, NOTTINGHAM 2023
