Introduction to Sound & Video with Kenji Takahashi
Are you an Art Technician who feels out of their depth with sound and video artworks? Or maybe you know a bit and you can muddle through but really want to understand how it all works? Well, have we got the training session for you!
We've lined up Kenji Takahashi, a super experienced freelance Exhibitions and Events Technician, who is a guru when it comes to audiovisual installations and works for Lisson Gallery, Serpentine Galleries, Haroon Mirza Studio, Tinguely Museum (Basel), Asian Art Museum (San Francisco), to name only a few! Having come from a multidisciplinary arts background, he continues to practise in a diverse field which includes indoor and outdoor theatrical events as well as musical performances, Kenji has a huge amount of knowledge that he will share in his Introduction to Sound and Video.
The training will take about 4.5 hours including a 30 minute break (depending on how much practical the group wants to do), and in it, Kenji will share his skills in a simple, straightforward tutorial followed by a practical workshop.
TUTORIAL:
SOUND: theory on sound, how it works, how we (AV technicians) talk about sound, what we commonly do with sound (in an exhibition AV setting);
VIDEO: theory on video, covering resolution, aspect ratio and frame rate, what information to look for when we specify equipment for a job. You will also cover video displays, with a little more attention on projectors and how to calculate placement and throw distance for projectors.
PRACTICAL SESSION:
This will be a break-out practical session with groups tasked with specifying equipment for various AV install based on some printouts of equipment specifications which will be followed by a discussion of your choices. You will also have the opportunity to have a look at various equipment close up.
You won’t become a master overnight but it will help you build the confidence to work with and understand sound and AV in an art context. You will come out knowing what you can and can’t do that’s for sure!
The precise location of the event will be shared with you once you have purchased your ticket to attend. It is however easily accessible from the Oval tube station.
